LUCA MARINELLI (he/him), born in Rome in 1984, graduated from the "Silvio D'Amico" National Acting Academy in 2009. His theatre career began with A SUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, after which he was chosen as the co-star of the film THE SINGULARITY OF THE PRIMARY NUMBERS (2010), directed by Saverio Costanzo. In the following years, he appeared in several films, including L'ULTIMO TERRESTRE (2011), TUTTI I SANTI GIORNI (2012) - for which he received his first nomination for the David di Donatello - and LA GRANDE BELLEZZA (2013) by Paolo Sorrentino.
In 2013, he was honoured with the Shooting Star Award at the Berlinale. A year later, he won the David di Donatello for Best Supporting Actor for THEY CALLED HIM JEEG ROBOT. Further leading roles followed: in 2015, he starred in the film NON ESSERE CATTIVO, which earned him a second David di Donatello nomination. In 2016, he received the Globo d'Oro for Best Actor for UNA QUESTIONE PRIVATA by the Taviani brothers.
In 2018, he appeared in the film RICORDI? and in the mini-series FABRIZIO DE ANDRÉ - PRINCIPE LIBERO, for which he was once again nominated for the David di Donatello. During the same period, he also began working internationally, including in Danny Boyle's series TRUST and in the Netflix films THE OLD GUARD (2020) and THE OLD GUARD 2 (2025) alongside Charlize Theron.
In 2019, he took on the lead role in MARTIN EDEN - for which he was awarded the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival and nominated for the European Film Award. In 2020 he was a member of the Berlinale jury. In 2021, he played the title character in DIABOLIK by the Manetti Bros. In 2022, he starred alongside Alessandro Borghi in THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS, which premiered in Cannes.
In 2023, he staged the theatre adaptation A REPORT FOR AN ACADEMY at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. 2025 saw the release of the Sky series M - IL FIGLIO DEL SECOLO, in which he played the lead role, directed by Joe Wright. PARENTAL LEAVE, directed by Alissa Jung, will be released in cinemas across Germany in November 2025.
In addition to his artistic work, Luca Marinelli has been involved with the PEN PAPER PEACE organisation for many years. The organisation combines educational work in Germany with a critical view of colonialism, promotes intercultural dialogue and supports projects in Haiti, Honduras and Namibia.
